What is trauma?

Trauma is defined as a “deeply distressing or disturbing experience. Every person experiences and responds to trauma in different ways, however, every person has encountered some type of trauma in their lifetime. Because of this, Kaivara firmly believes that trauma is something that connects all humans. It is a unique factor in everyone’s life experiences. This is why Kaivara utilizes a multitude of methods to help client’s process, reprocess, and reframe their traumatic experiences by use of evidence-based practices. These variations in therapies allow clients and find interventions that help them process their unique trauma with the guidance of Kaivara’s experienced clinicians.

Many people have experienced trauma through child abuse and neglect, religious/spiritual crisis, rejection, and attachment/abandonment. Research has shown that at times of trauma such as these experiences, our brains develop defense mechanisms and coping skills to protect us. Therapy is an important tool for a person to be able to process and reframe this mental and emotional response in order to begin the journey of healing.
